Fractional executives, Maryland and DC

The senior people you cannot afford to hire. On retainer, together.

A general counsel, a CIO and a chief security officer who have each run companies, served on the same team, for owner-led businesses with 10 to 150 employees. One monthly retainer. No marketplace, no recruiter, no junior staff.

The Virtual C-Suite is a standing team of fractional executives based in Maryland. Three named partners, a registered patent attorney and former tech founder (general counsel), a 30-year IT operator (CIO) and a 25-year FBI executive (security), work with your leadership team on a monthly retainer, in person in the Maryland, DC and Virginia corridor and remotely nationwide.

What is a fractional executive team?

A fractional executive is a senior leader who works for your company part-time, usually 8 to 30 hours a month, on a retainer instead of a salary. A fractional executive team is several of them who already work together, so the legal, technology and security sides of a decision get made in one meeting instead of three. Most firms sell one fractional role at a time. We sell the table.

Who it is for

  • Owner-led companies with 10 to 150 employees and $2 million to $50 million in revenue [confirm range]
  • Businesses about to do something they have not done before: franchise, launch a regulated product, take a government contract, sell
  • Companies that have outgrown "ask my accountant and my cousin who does IT" but cannot carry three executive salaries
  • Leadership teams in Maryland, DC and Northern Virginia who want people in the room, not on a dashboard

Who it is not for

  • Startups looking for an interim full-time executive for a funding round
  • Companies that need a help desk, bookkeeping or a marketing agency (we can point you to good ones)
  • Anyone who wants to pick from a list of 500 résumés. There are three of us.

How an engagement works

  1. A 30-minute call with a partner to name the decision you are stuck on.
  2. A 90-day plan with the seats you need, the hours per month and one number.
  3. A standing monthly leadership meeting plus the work between meetings, reviewed quarterly.

What does it cost?

Single-seat retainers start at $2,500 a month. The three-seat team starts at $6,000 a month, and at its fullest, with all three partners embedded, runs about $35,000 a month, which is less than the fully loaded cost of one full-time general counsel. Ranges, inclusions and what we do not charge for are on the pricing page.
